The Challenge
Various communities throughout the United States suffer from excess nitrogen infiltrating their watersheds and contaminating their aquifers and other water resources. The source of the excess nitrogen is invariably human and animal waste that is not properly treated before its re-introduction to the environment. The result is a decades-long leaching of excess nitrogen through the soil which contaminates local ponds, lakes, streams, rivers and ultimately entire watersheds and coastlines. Nitrogen-fed algae are choking extensive watersheds to death and affecting the fishing industry, resorts, beaches and valuable public & private property.
Contaminated watersheds are frequently attacked by various brown/red/blue/green algae tides that destroy fishing habitats and industries including shell fishing, fishing and tourism. This chemical and biological destruction can be mitigated and reversed by proper treatment at the source of the problem – excess nitrogen.
Federal, state and local municipal government efforts to address the excess nitrogen contamination at its source are handicapped by a lack of funding. State and local governmental budgets are severely restricted by taxpayer revolts and prior electoral commitments to various pension and welfare benefit plans, along with increasing community requirements. These tax restraints and prior benefit commitments result in a lack of tax-based capital for investment in traditional municipal infrastructure, especially wastewater treatment facilities.
